Boswellia carteri, commonly known as frankincense or olibanum tree, is a species of flowering plant in the family Burseraceae. Native to the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula and Northeast Africa, particularly Somalia, it’s renowned for producing aromatic resin used in incense and traditional medicine. The tree has a distinctive appearance with papery, peeling bark and compound leaves. Its resin, obtained by making incisions in the trunk, has been valued since ancient times for religious ceremonies, perfumery and therapeutic applications. Modern research suggests potential anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties of frankincense extracts, though further studies are needed to confirm these effects. Some clinical studies have weakly demonstrated the effectiveness of frankincense resin in some disease conditions like asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, osteoarthritis and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, however more studies are necessary
